<p>Are you tired of diet tips handed out by someone with apparently unlimited income and time? For some of us, it may just not be practical to spend half of our Sunday preparing carefully portioned meals for the rest of the week, or financially feasible to buy all our meals prepackaged in just the right portions. And there are those of us who cringe at the thought of weighing food to achieve &#8216;optimal portion sizes&#8217;. Here are ten real life diet tips for the rest of us.</p>
<p>1. Eating out? Restaurant portions tend to be enormous, and if it&#8217;s on<br />
the plate, we tend to eat it. If it&#8217;s possible, order from the kid’s<br />
menu, where portions are more reasonably sized.</p>
<p>2. Keep healthy snacks around and easily accessible. A bowl of fruit on<br />
the kitchen table, a container of celery or carrot sticks in the refrigerator, or a couple of pop-open cans of fruit salad in your desk at work will help you grab for something healthy when those first hunger pains begin.  In other words, you&#8217;ll be more likely to grab something low-calorie and good for you if it&#8217;s easy to eat.</p>
<p>3. Substitute frozen vegetables for canned. Canned veggies tend to be<br />
high in sodium, which you don&#8217;t need, and low in real nutrition, which<br />
you do. Buy economy size bags with zip closures to make it easy to pour<br />
out a single serving for a meal.</p>
<p>4. Buy a vegetable steamer. Steaming is one of the healthiest ways to<br />
cook vegetables. The food retains nearly all of its natural nutrients<br />
instead of leaching it out into the cooking water. Even better, it makes your veggies taste great - which means you&#8217;ll be more likely to eat them instead of filling up on fatty foods that pack on weight.</p>
<p>5. Never eat standing up. One of the easiest ways to sabotage your diet<br />
is to &#8216;eat without thinking&#8217;. Treat eating with the respect that it<br />
deserves. Fix yourself a plate. Sit down and eat properly. You&#8217;ll be less likely to just pop food into your mouth without paying attention.</p>
<p>6. Spread your meals out. When you eat three meals a day, your body<br />
tends to store whatever it doesn&#8217;t need right that moment. By adopting a &#8216;grazing&#8217; habit, you&#8217;ll keep your metabolism working throughout the day. Have a small breakfast, a piece of fruit with crackers or toast at<br />
mid-morning, a light lunch and an &#8216;after school snack&#8217; mid-afternoon. Just remember that you&#8217;re breaking up the same amount of food into smaller meals, not ADDING more food into your daily diet.</p>
<p>7. Grab a fruit juice or flavored water instead of soda. Soda is<br />
nothing but empty calories. No nutrients, lots of sugar. Instead, grab a bottle of 100% fruit juice, or water flavored with a spritz of fruit.</p>
<p>8. Drink water. Even the FDA recommends at least 8 full 8 ounce glasses<br />
of water a day to keep your body working right. When you&#8217;re dieting,<br />
you should drink even more. It&#8217;s not just that full feeling - water helps your body digest foods properly and cleans out your system.</p>
<p>9. Can&#8217;t afford a gym membership? Make a pact with friends to exercise<br />
together. Make a date at least three times a week to play volleyball,<br />
take a walk or spend half an hour doing something active.</p>
<p>10. Skip the potato chips. Fatty snacks fried in hydrogenated oil like<br />
potato chips contribute fat and calories and not much else. Instead,<br />
grab a handful of dried fruit or a cup of yogurt for the same amount of<br />
calories and a lot more nutritional benefit.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Everyone, it seems, is trying strange fads or ingesting crazy concoctions to lose weight or improve their health. They want a get slim quick fix, or an easy elixer of youth, or something else equally absurd instead of to take the time actually required to improve health. The latest fad is called the 3 day diet, and it claims that, by consuming what it tells you to, you can lose ten pounds in three days. Come on, what are we foolish. It tells you to eat saltine crackers, toast, eggs, tuna, coffee, tea, apples, cheese. All regular stuff, nothing magical or “high tech” in any of it, and in 3 days, you&#8217;re supposed to lose all of that weight. I have trouble believing it.</p>
<p>If it is true, it is probably because of the small amount you eat on the 3 day diet, and it probably is mostly “water weight.” Water weight means that what you lose is mostly water flushing out of your system, and very little body mass is actually reduced. Losing water weight is actually pretty pointless since it just means getting dehydrated. This can be dangerous, and is certainly unhealthy.</p>
<p>The best way to lose weight is the old, traditional way, in my oppinion, although it takes a little longer. You exercise regularly, eat lots of green leafy vegetables, and also fruits in moderation, cut out processed and fatty foods, and don&#8217;t snack between meals. Also, very high carbohydrate food is not really good for your diet either as it will fill you up with calories. This is not a 3 day diet, or even a 30 day diet, but nonetheless, within a couple of months, you will be slimmer and healthier, and happier too.</p>
<p>There are diets that are outright dangerous. The atkins diet, for example, works by throwing your liver into ketosis by eating nothing but lots of protien. This can cause liver damage, and in some cases, death. Nonetheless, it does make you lose weight at a high rate of speed, but once you get off it, you will probably gain the weight right back.</p>
<p>If you are going to get on a 3 day diet program, one thing to consider is what kind of exercise to do to supplement your dieting. Jogging is very good, but can be hard on your knees. Bike riding is a little safer on your joints in the long run. One of the best exercises, however, is swimming, because it is zero impact and exercises the whole body. Personally, I like to swim for at least half an hour every day. Nothing makes me feel healthier or more refreshed.</p>

<p>The best weight loss method for each person varies.  There is no magic solution that will help every person lose a few pounds.</p>
<p>If you are ready to begin your own personal weight loss journey, you’ll first want to decide on whether or not you can handle the road alone.</p>
<p>Losing weight is a difficult process and for some people the best weight loss method comes with a room of supporters.  There are several programs available that offer people the opportunity to share their weight loss journey with others.  Through the use of weekly meetings people find kinship during their weight loss.  It’s a very successful approach and for some they whole heartedly believe it is the best weight loss method available.</p>

<p>Exercise is beneficial in keeping both the body and the mind moving.  When a person exercises they are stimulating many parts of their body and it gives them a renewed sense of energy.  Their self-esteem increases and as the pounds disappear they feel even more compelled to lose weight.</p>
<p>The best weight loss method for you will be the one you feel comfortable with and can stick with over time.  Don’t consider it a diet consider it a method to change your life for the better.  After all there’s nothing more rewarding than being healthy. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have never tried the zone diet, but I am considering it. I have about fifteen extra pounds that I would love to see magically disappear. There are many products available for those of us who want to lose weight, but most of them have exaggerated and unrealistic claims. I am not in a hurry to lose the weight. I want permanent weight loss and this requires a permanent life change. Even though I watch what I eat and I exercise regularly, I still need a little extra kick in my diet that will help me shed the extra pounds. The zone diet is a reasonable approach to weight loss. Their meal replacement bars are by no means as appealing as a Snicker’s bar, but the zone diet meal replacement bar is a lot tastier than most other brands. I am not officially on the zone diet, but I do eat the zone meal replacement bars to ensure that I get the proper nutrition. The bars are loaded with protein, vitamins and other nutrients and they curb my appetite. The zone diet bars are also kind to my digestive system. I do not have discomfort or digestive problems that I have experienced with other meal replacement bars. The zone diet follows the theory that a high protein and low carbohydrate intake is crucial to your weight loss success. The diet also suggests that you follow a regular exercise routine on a consistent basis. I am not a big fan of low carbohydrate diets because I have been on them in the past. Even though I had significant weight loss in a short period of time, I found that the pounds came back two fold once I started eating carbohydrates. As a rule, I try to follow diets that require me to completely cut something out of my diet all together. The notion of my completely cutting carbohydrates out of my diet is unrealistic. I may be able to follow a low carbohydrate diet for awhile, but I will inevitably reintroduce carbohydrates into my eating habits. People need carbohydrates. The zone diet does allow good carbs in its plan. The zone diet is more realistic and easier to follow than a low carb plan like the Atkins diet. Right now, I am replacing one meal with the zone diet meal replacement bar. I also have one when I am craving something sweet. I am exercising and I think that I am eating right, but the pounds are stubborn. I am going to read up a little more on the zone diet and I am going to follow it, at least until the last fifteen pounds are gone. Maybe my current rendition of the zone diet will be adequate for maintenance.</p>

<p>When we chose to change our eating habits, we usually diet to lose weight. Sometimes we may have health issues, such as high cholesterol, which is what leads us to eat healthier. Often times we diet to lose weight because as we are overweight and realize that our eating habits may have gotten in this predicament to begin with. It is possible to just exercise and lose weight, but sooner or later the person will not lose any more weight without changing eating habits as well. Most of the time it is the other way around; people diet, that is they count carbohydrates, fat grams, or calories, somehow limiting their food intake to reach weight loss goals. Even though every source you read on diet to lose weight encourages combining the diet plan with exercise, not everyone does this right away. Of course, it is ideal to diet and exercise from the beginning of a diet plan, some people may feel overwhelmed by taking on too much change at once, if exercise has not been a part of their life.</p>
<p>There are quite a few online support sites to visit, that have a multitude of information for anyone looking to diet to lose weight. Some diets work better for some than others, for instance, the Atkins diet required quite a drastic cut in carbohydrates, which may not be an appropriate diet to lose weight for everyone. The South Beach Diet is a popular diet to lose weight because it allows dieters to eat many of the foods they eat anyway and is not quite as restrictive as others. I hate to be a naysayer, but prolonged and sustained weight lose will almost always take both a lot of time and a lot of effort.  </p>

There are a number of diets that fall under this category, and they all advertise that you can lose 10 or more pounds in just a few days.  While its true that by virtually starving yourself you can indeed lose weight fast, you are throwing your metabolism into ‘starvation mode’ and as soon as you resume a regular diet you’ll put the weight right back on again.  </p>
<p>One of the scariest trends in losing weight fast is by way of the use of medication or diet pills.  These pills all function with the same basic idea as starvation diets yet use powerful stimulants to suppress your appetite so that you won’t even want to eat anyway.  Using powerful stimulants will help you lose weight fast, but again will put you on ‘starvation mode’ and you’ll regain lost weight faster than you lost it.  And using these drugs over a long period can be dangerous, increasing your risks of heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes.  Don’t be fooled by advertisements claiming that their product is safe.  Any and all appetite suppressants pose certain health risks, and should only be used as a last resort and with the advice of a physician.  </p>
<p>If you are really motivated to lose weight fast, you’ll probably be motivated to speak with a doctor or nutritionist about it.  There are a number of weight loss programs that are effective in helping you lose weight and keep it off.  The more effective of these programs will involve some amount of regular exercise, and a diet that does not starve you but rather focuses on frequent, healthy low calorie meals and snacks.  </p>
<p>You have to ask yourself, what is more important?  Do I want to lose weight fast but then regain it and possibly injure myself in the process, or do I want to spend some time and effort and lose weight permanently? <p>It&#8217;s a surgical procedure. So that means there are the risks associated with it. The thing to do is figure out whether in your case the benefits outweigh the risks. The benefits are considerable.</p>
<p>But first, a little description. Abdominoplasty is the reduction of excess skin and fat from the abdomen and the tightening of muscles of the abdominal wall. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the most challenging things mothers have to face is getting back into shape after giving birth. Many of us have very demanding cravings that have to be addressed while we are pregnant. Mine were so demanding that I put on a whopping eighty pounds during the nine-month long adventure. I have worked very hard to lose the extra weight, but I still have 10 pounds to lose.</p>
<p>The last little bit of weight has been very stubborn and in spite of my denying myself the little treats that I adore and in spite of my working out diligently on a consistent schedule the weight just won’t come off. Right now, I am looking for a solution to the final bit of weight. Having only 10 pounds to lose may not seem like a big deal, but it really is if you are working so hard to reach a goal. Those final few pounds can be extremely aggravating.</p>
<p>One thing to consider is the body’s set point. For some reason, the human body chooses a weight that it finds comfortable and it fights to stay there no matter what. I guess that my body chose to settle on a set point right when I had 10 pounds to lose. The set point seems to have changed since I had the baby for some reason. Perhaps it is because of the significant weight gain. </p>
<p>Things have not been very easy, either. You can usually fit into your regular clothes when you have 10 pounds to lose, but they absolutely do not look good at all. I can get into my pre-pregnancy clothing; I just can’t really wear my pre-pregnancy clothing. I can squeeze into my favorite pair of jeans but I can’t sit down in them. I like to be comfortable, so wearing most of my wardrobe is out of the question.</p>
<p>I’m sure that there is a reasonable solution to my little dilemma. I lost seventy pounds without significant problems. At first, the weight literally melted off and I could hardly believe the quick process. Soon things began to slow down, but I found that increasing my activity and cutting out a few calories did the trick. Now that I have 10 pounds to lose, I am in a whole new situation.</p>
<p>Maybe this is my body’s way of telling me that it is time to get serious about my fitness routine. A little jaunt around the block three times each week is not going to do the trick. With only 10 pounds to lose, I am very motivated to reach that seemingly unattainable goal. I’ve made it this far. I’m sure I can finish. </p>

The idea of taking a pill to magically make your excess weight fall off is a very tempting thought for anyone struggling with traditional diets and exercise programs.  Weight loss supplements are therefore an extremely popular commodity, especially in the United States.</p>
<p>Not only are the people of the U.S. more overweight than just about every other country in the world, but the U.S. practically worships medication as a solution to all of life’s problems.  This combination has led to a booming weight loss supplement industry in America, with hundreds if not thousands of different brands on the market today.  </p>
<p>Most weight loss supplements work by the same general principle of appetite suppression.  Appetite suppressants are always CNS stimulants of one kind or another, and therefore will also trigger a number of ‘side effects’ in addition to lowering your appetite.  The side effects include an increased heart rate, a boost to your blood pressure, and often a roller coaster effect on your blood sugar levels.  Weight loss supplements are therefore not without some risks, especially if you suffer from heart disease of any kind, or diabetes. </p>
<p>The irony about weight loss supplements is that most people that would benefit from them are also people that are at risk to take them.  People who are very much overweight are far more likely to suffer from heart disease, hypertension, or diabetes, and therefore shouldn’t take weight loss supplements that work by way of a stimulant.  </p>
<p>One of the first stimulants that was popular in weight loss supplements was ephedra.  Ephedra is the precursor chemical to amphetamines, and has many of the same upper like effects on your body.  After it became clear that ephedra based medication was causing people to have heart attacks or other fatal health complications, ephedra has become less popular as a weight loss pill ingredient.  Be careful though, just because a diet pill advertises itself as ‘ephedra free’ doesn’t mean that is stimulant free, as there are many different stimulants out there that also share the same risks as ephedra.  If the supplement you are considering indicates that it will ‘boost your energy levels’, it’s got a stimulant.  </p>
<p>Though risky and not without some side effects, weight loss supplements may be appropriate for some people.  Of course, a healthy diet and regular exercise is the best way to lose weight and keep it off, but no one really wants to hear that.  If you are considering a weight loss supplement, its always a good idea to talk to your doctor about it first.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For anyone who has had a never ending battle with the bulge, weight loss diets are a godsend. Or a nightmare, depending on your perspective! Ask anyone who has ever been on a weight loss diet and you will get a mixed bag of reactions. While some will vouch for their specific weight loss diet, others will pooh pooh all weight loss diets and call them fanciful or useless. But the fact remains that if you intend to burn that fat, a weight loss diet is your best bet.</p>
<p>Over the years, weight loss diets have become an industry in their own right. If one were to track the genesis of weight loss diets, the seventies would be a great place to start. For this is when the first of the weight loss diets made an appearance. Decades of stable economy coupled with an increased earning capacity and standard of living gave most Americans the traditional symbol of prosperity – an expanding midriff. And for those who were image conscious, the very first weight loss diets were created. Since weight loss diets were concocted mostly at home, and included instructions on what not to eat rather than what to eat, the industry (if you can call it that) was not very successful. You must remember that this was an age when food, diets and nutrition had still to become key areas with qualified professionals offering advice. Typically, it was the lady of the house who was supposed to keep a check on the bulge around her man’s midriff and she did this by doing away with or slowly but steadily eliminating known weight gaining foods. Nutrition and balanced weight loss diets were still unknown as yet.</p>
<p>It was in the early eighties however that weight loss diets became a full-fledged institution. By now, the battle against the bulge had become a real enough health issue for governments and healthcare providers to sit up and take notice. The census and healthcare figures of this period reveal that nearly one out of every four Americans was clinically obese. And weigh loss diets and practitioners literally began crawling out of the woodwork to set shop. This was the time when numerous fads emerged. There were some weight loss diets that encouraged vegetarianism. Others like the Atkins weight loss diet promoted eating of meet, but disallowed starch and carbohydrates. Some other weight loss diets promoted fresh fruits and vegetables exclusively while still others eschewed everything that contributed to excess calories. This was an era when calorie counters emerged and weight loss diets became synonymous with body fat analysis and lean muscle weight.</p>
<p>Being clinically obese, I too experimented with several weight loss diets in the hope that they would whack me into shape. But the truth of the matter is that no weight loss diet, no matter how extreme, will ever work without a healthy dose of exercise. Sitting on the couch, not eating may help you lose weight, but ti will surely leave you weakened and unhealthy. But an effective weight loss diet coupled with regular, calorie-burning exercise will do wonders for your metabolism.</p>

Social stigmas aside, obesity vastly increases your risks of developing all manner of diseases and conditions, many of which are serious and life threatening.  Strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, and some cancers are just a sample of the conditions you can likely look forward to if you are suffering from severe obesity, and even mild obesity boosts your chances of these diseases occurring.  Loosing weight is therefore one of the best things you can do for yourself if you are obese.  It seems like a daunting task, but if you work at it anything is possible.  Here are some basic weight loss tips.</p>
<p>The first and perhaps most important weight loss tip is to stay positive, and keep focused.  Weight loss is more of a mental battle than it is a physical one.  Losing hope or getting discouraged is the reason why people fail in losing weight, not because the weight loss tips don’t work.  Take small, reasonable steps.  It’s not going to happen overnight, and pushing yourself too much may just cause you to loose hope when you don’t get immediate results.  Also, seek support from friends and family.  Join some support groups and make connections with others struggling to loose weight.  Not only are support networks great in keeping you positive, but they’re a great medium for the exchange of ideas.  You can learn some great weight loss tips from others like you!</p>
<p>This last point is especially important, because often times you’ll find some weight loss tips won’t work for you even though they work for others.  Therefore, its good to try a lot of different things.  Some of the most basic weight loss tips that generally work for everyone to at least some degree involve ways of boosting your metabolism.  The two most important thigns to keep in mind to keep your metabolism up is your level of activity and how often you eat.  Never starve yourself!  Starving is a guaranteed way of slowing your metabolism to a crawl.  Eat often, but eat healthy.  And of course, stay active!  Even just 30 minutes of walking a day can do wonders in boosting your metabolism.  </p>
<p>As far as exercise weight loss tips go, slow but steady progress is important.  Do something active everyday, and gradually do more and more.  Finding something you like doing, like sports or hiking, is great, but you need to make sure you’re able to do it often.  Also, mix your activities up; the more muscle groups you work out regularly, the better the overall boost to you metabolism.  Don’t give up!  </p>

This type of diet is very popular now, because people who are trying to lose weight have discovered how effective low carb diet plans really are. Many of us love carbs, and it really is hard to lose weight and keep it off without restricting carbs in the diet. There are many low carb diet plans to choose from, and the only way to decide which one is right for you, is to compare each of them side by side to see which one you can live with. <p> There are good carbs and bad carbs just like anything else. Bad carbs include breads, baked goods, cereals, pastas, white potatoes, white rice, certain candies, and most alcoholic beverages. Good carbs are those that are high in fiber and low in carb count, such as, sweet potatoes, brown and wild rice, whole grain breads and pastas, fresh fruits and vegetables, and red or white wine. Each low carb diet plan is somewhat the same, except they are each unique regarding how much of what you get to eat when. <p>The Atkins diet is focused on eating meats, protein, and good fats, and does not include any fruits or vegetables in the beginning, which may not be tolerable for some people. This diet also only allows twenty carbs or less per day, and heavily encourages the use of dietary supplements. The South Beach Diet is somewhat easier to stick to because it allows a greater variety of foods in the first phase, including vegetables and lean meats, and does not restrict the carb count as much as Atkins. The Zone is another popular low carb diet plan that incorporates some of the same principles of the Atkins and South Beach Diets, but  the emphasis is on keeping the ratio of daily intake at 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% fat. Meals are divided into ‘blocks’ and basically the same foods are eaten throughout the diet, the only difference being, that more fat is added after goal weight is obtained to keep the dieter from continuing to lose more weight. </p>
<p>Whichever low carb diet plan you chose will be effective, that is a given, because carbs are what affect the insulin levels in our bodies and cause cravings. Once we have learned to eat in a healthy way, and only eat the good carbs, we will weight less and be able to keep the weight off. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have never tried the zone diet, but I am considering it. I have about fifteen extra pounds that I would love to see magically disappear. There are many products available for those of us who want to lose weight, but most of them have exaggerated and unrealistic claims. I am not in a hurry to lose the weight. I want permanent weight loss and this requires a permanent life change. </p>
<p>Even though I watch what I eat and I exercise regularly, I still need a little extra kick in my diet that will help me shed the extra pounds. The zone diet is a reasonable approach to weight loss. Their meal replacement bars are by no means as appealing as a Snicker’s bar, but the zone diet meal replacement bar is a lot tastier than most other brands. </p>
<p>I am not officially on the zone diet, but I do eat the zone meal replacement bars to ensure that I get the proper nutrition. The bars are loaded with protein, vitamins and other nutrients and they curb my appetite. The zone diet bars are also kind to my digestive system. I do not have discomfort or digestive problems that I have experienced with other meal replacement bars.</p>
<p>The zone diet follows the theory that a high protein and low carbohydrate intake is crucial to your weight loss success. The diet also suggests that you follow a regular exercise routine on a consistent basis. I am not a big fan of low carbohydrate diets because I have been on them in the past. Even though I had significant weight loss in a short period of time, I found that the pounds came back two fold once I started eating carbohydrates. </p>
<p>As a rule, I try to follow diets that require me to completely cut something out of my diet all together. The notion of my completely cutting carbohydrates out of my diet is unrealistic. I may be able to follow a low carbohydrate diet for awhile, but I will inevitably reintroduce carbohydrates into my eating habits. People need carbohydrates. The zone diet does allow good carbs in its plan. The zone diet is more realistic and easier to follow than a low carb plan like the Atkins diet. </p>
<p>Right now, I am replacing one meal with the zone diet meal replacement bar. I also have one when I am craving something sweet. I am exercising and I think that I am eating right, but the pounds are stubborn. I am going to read up a little more on the zone diet and I am going to follow it, at least until the last fifteen pounds are gone. Maybe my current rendition of the zone diet will be adequate for maintenance. </p>

<p>Against a background of widespread obesity among all US age-groups, and the relative failure of conventional weight loss methods, doctors are increasingly resorting to gastrointestinal surgery in order to curb the rise of weight-related disease, and associated costs. An estimated 170,000 weight loss surgeries will be performed in 2005, and although the average bariatric surgery patient is a woman in her late 30s who weighs approximately 300 pounds, operations such as vertical banded gastroplasty and roux-en-Y bypass are now being successfully conducted on patients as young as 13 years.</p>
<p>But Does Bariatric Surgery Work?</p>
<p>While the increasing popularity of obesity surgery is a clear reflection of the inability of most obese patients to comply with conventional dietary treatments, the question remains: does this type of surgical treatment offer an effective solution for severe clinical obesity? To understand the issues raised by this question, let us examine the problem of obesity and how surgery attempts to reduce it.</p>
<p>How Widespread is Obesity?</p>
<p>According to current statistics, 61.3 million American adults (30.5 percent) are obese. In addition, an estimated 10-15 percent of children (ages 6?11) and 15 percent of teenagers are overweight and at risk of developing weight-related disorders. Severe obesity is also on the rise. Six million American adults are morbidly obese (BMI 40+), while another 9.6 million have a BMI of 35-40. (Source: US Census 2000; NHANES III data estimates)</p>
<p>How Does Obesity Affect Health?</p>
<p>Excess body fat associated with high body mass index (BMI) carries an increased risk of premature death. Obese patients (BMI 30+) have a 50-100 percent increased risk of death from all causes, compared with individuals of normal weight (BMI 20?25). Morbid obesity (BMI 40+) and super-obesity (BMI 50+) carries a still higher risk of dying younger. Most of the increased risk is due to co-morbid conditions like cardiovascular disease (atherosclerosis, heart attack or stroke). The effects of severe obesity on longevity are dramatic. Obese white males between 20 and 30 years old (BMI > 45) can shorten their life expectancy by 13 years. African-American men of similar age and BMI can lose up to 20 years of life. Obese white females between 20 and 30 years old (BMI > 45) can shorten their life expectancy by 8 years. African-American women of similar age and BMI can lose up to 5 years of life.</p>
<p>Research Into Obesity and Premature Death</p>
<p>A 12-year study of 330,000 obese men and 420,000 obese women, revealed that premature mortality rates for morbidly obese men were twice the normal: 500 percent higher for diabetics and 400 percent higher for those with digestive tract disease. In severely obese women, the mortality was also increased two fold, while in female diabetics the mortality risk increased eight fold and three fold in those with digestive tract disease. Another study of 200 men aged 23-70 years with severe clinical obesity, showed a 1200 percent increase in mortality in the 25-34 year age group and a 600 percent increase in the 35-44 year age group. Average cancer mortality rates are 150-500 percent higher in obese patients.</p>
<p>Other Obesity-Related Diseases</p>
<p>Aside from premature death, obesity is strongly associated with a wide range of health disorders. 80 percent of patients with type 2 diabetes are obese, while almost 70 percent of diagnosed heart disease is obesity-related. Other obesity-related disorders include: high blood pressure, cancer, carpal tunnel syndrome, depression, gallstones, gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), insulin resistance, low back pain, obstructive sleep apnea, musculoskeletal complaints and osteoarthritis, respiratory problems, stroke, and vein disorders.</p>
<p>Why is Surgical Treatment is Needed?</p>
<p>As the facts demonstrate, obesity is an independent risk factor for a number of serious diseases. Severe obesity, if left untreated, leads to life-threatening disorders and possible premature death. It is against this background that the viability of bariatric surgery should be assessed. Three key questions are: (1) Does bariatric surgery lead to a significant loss of weight? (2) What are the health benefits of surgery? (3) What are health risks?</p>
<p>Does Bariatric Surgery Lead To A Significant Loss of Weight?</p>
<p>Yes. According to most patient-surveys the health and weight reduction benefits of bariatric surgery exceed all other treatment methods by a wide margin. Weight loss surgery is considered successful when excess weight is reduced by 50 percent and the weight loss is sustained for five years. At present, average excess weight reduction at five years is 45-75 percent after gastric bypass and 40-60 percent after vertical banded gastroplasty. In a statistical review of over 600 bariatric patients following gastric bypass, with 96 percent follow-up, mean excess weight loss still exceeded 50 percent of initial excess weight at fourteen years. Another 10 year follow-up study from the University of Virginia reports weight reduction of 60 percent of excess weight at 5 years and in the mid 50&#8217;s between years 6 and 10. A significant percentage of less-committed patients do regain weight 2-5 years after having surgery, especially those who undergo the less drastic stomach banding procedure, but if the patient is well motivated and given proper post-operative support, the weight loss is usually permanent. By comparison, according to one 4-year study of non-surgical weight loss programs involving obesity medication, behavior modification, diet and exercise, average weight reduction was 3 pounds in those subjects who were followed for the four years of the study.</p>
<p>What Are The Health Benefits of Surgery?</p>
<p>According to the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO), weight reduction caused by gastric reduction surgery improves longevity and reduces rates of premature death. In addition, hypertension is cured in about 50 percent of patients, while measurements of cholesterol and other blood fats show visible improvements, all leading to a reduction in the risk of heart disease. Type 2 diabetes is cured in 80 percent of diabetic patients while hyperglycemia and associated conditions such as hyperinsulimia and insulin resistance are even more likely to benefit from gastric bypass. Obstructive sleep apnea is cured in about 75 percent of patients, shortness of breath is relieved in 75-80 percent of cases, while asthma attacks are significantly reduced, particularly when associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease. Obesity surgery also relieves low back pain and arthritis, heartburn, urinary incontinence, and lower limb venous disorders.</p>
<p>What Are The Health Risks?</p>
<p>Generally speaking, the health complications of bariatric surgery divide into three classes. First, during the operation itself, patients are subject to the normal health dangers of any serious surgical procedure. Risk factors include: patient condition, the expertise of the bariatric surgeon and anesthesiologist and the quality of operating room services. Premature death occurs in about 1-2.5 percent of bariatric cases. Second, there are well-documented post-operative health risks, which largely depend on the type of procedure performed.</p>
<p>Post-Operative Health Problems of Gastric Banding</p>
<p>Restrictive procedures like gastric-banding and stomach stapling carry a number of short-term post-operative health risks, including: (1) Risk of hernia. About 10-20 percent of patients require additional surgery to fix problems like abdominal hernias caused by excessive straining after surgery before the incision heals. Laparoscopic surgery reduces this risk. (2) Risk of blood clots. About 1 percent of patients contract blood clots in the legs. (3) Risk of infection. On average, there is a 5 percent risk of infection in the incision area. (4) Risk of gastric staple breakage. This occurs in bariatric operations like vertical banded gastroplasty, that use staples to reduce stomach size. (5) Risk of band slippage and saline leakage. A routine complication, this occurs after lap band or other forms of adjustable gastric banding. (6) Risk of bowel obstruction. This rare complication may occur due to adhesions caused by scar tissue. (7) Risk of stomal stenosis and marginal ulcers.</p>
<p>Post-Operative Health Problems of Gastric Bypass</p>
<p>Post-operative health dangers of bypass procedures like roux-en-y or biliopancreatic diversion include: (1) Corrective operations. About 15-20 percent of bypass patients require follow-up gastrointestinal operations to correct complications (eg. hernias). These follow-up operations tend to carry higher risk of complication and death. (2) Dumping Syndrome. Caused by overeating or over-rapid eating, dumping, is not a real health danger, but symptoms (nausea, faintness, sweating and diarrhea) can be distressing. (3) Risk of nutritional deficiency. Since stomach bypass surgery involves bypassing the duodenum and part/all of the jejunum, causing insufficient absorption of vitamins and minerals, patients can develop deficiencies in nutrients like: iron, calcium, vitamin D and B12 deficiency. This can be easily corrected by a program of nutritional supplementation. (4) Risk of gallstones. About one-third of bypass patients develop gallstones. (5) Bowel Disorders. After all bypass operations, there is a period of intestinal adaptation during which bowel movements can be liquid and frequent. Typically accompanied by bloating, gas and foul smelling stools, this complaint may reduce with time, but occasionally becomes a permanent condition.</p>
<p>Bariatric Surgery is No Easy Answer To Obesity</p>
<p>Even though surgical methods are becoming more and more successful for the reduction of severe obesity, it would be misleading to present surgery as an easy option. To begin with, its success depends entirely on patient compliance with post-operative guidelines. And pressures to overeat do not disappear after surgery. If patients adhere to instructions, they tend to lose weight without regain. If they &#8220;cheat&#8221;, they tend to regain most of their weight loss and may end up in a worse condition than before. Second, due to cost and availability issues, bariatric surgery can only ever treat a tiny percentage of the population who are severely obese. Third, we lack long term feedback on the success of these operations. For these reasons, it seems that bariatric surgery is no easy solution to our obesity epidemic.</p>

However, many people use the term obesity as short-hand for overeating or lack of exercise. But that is not its definition. Consider this: most people can distinguish between smoking and lung cancer. One is a behavior and one is a disease. Or problem drinking of alcohol and liver disease. One is a behavior and one is a disease. Sunbathing without protection is a behavior; skin cancer is a disease.</p>
<p>Second, obesity - the excess accumulation of body fat - fits all the definitions of &#8220;disease.&#8221; How is &#8220;disease&#8221; defined? Most dictionaries, general as well as medical, define a disease as an interruption, cessation or disorder of a bodily function, organ or system. Obesity certainly fits this definition. </p>
<p>All over the world, obesity has become an unstoppable epidemic. Several people diet every year of because of obesity problems. Well, I&#8217;m here to tell you that obesity is very controllable. Many people struggle with obesity. Whether, it&#8217;s from a large build, slower metabolism, or heredity, we are all capable of obesity too. The truth of the matter is obesity will probably be with some people for their entire lives.</p>
<p>However, obesity can be different. A small percentage of people have medical reasons for obesity. The other percentage of people simply can&#8217;t stop eating all the bad stuff that leads to their obesity. Remember seeing those people at fast food place trying to eat their burgers and feel good about it. Well, we all know that diet coke will not make up for the bad calorie intake. </p>
<p>Here are some basic steps to get you pointed in the right direction of a very long road to obesity recovery. Just keep in mind that it takes time and patients but it certainly will payoff in the long run. Ok! Let&#8217;s get rid of obesity once and for all. Write this done so you can get you obesity plan started right now!</p>
<p>Stop eating those fatty foods! Burgers, fries, cake&#8230; you name it! Before you can fix your problem, you have to admit that you have one. If you feel the need to eat something, get some fresh fruit or vegetables sticks. Fruits and vegetables contain the right nutrients that your body needs for good health and energy. It is also a fact that it will actually burn some of that obesity.</p>
<p>Always consult with a Doctor. If you are more than 50 pounds overweight, Allow for your physician to give you some medical input on what the right diet and exercise program is for you. </p>
<p>If this is something that you&#8217;ve always struggled with and can seem to beat. You may consider surgery or personal training. There are many options so don&#8217;t beat yourself up to much. Is there a deep seated, subconscious reason for your obesity or eating disorder? Only so can find this out! When you discover the reasons for your self destructive behavior, you will be better equipped to handle your obesity. Remember that it will indeed take time and patients. But you have the power to overcome obesity. Use all your resources such as friends and family for moral support as well. In closing, beating obesity is just a matter of prevention, discipline and lots of patients. It&#8217;s about forming a new healthier lifestyle that will benefit you throughout the years. </p>
